newborn puppys body goes stiff while using the restroom

i'm having to feed and care for two newborn pups, i notice every time they use the restroom their body stiffens up and their mouths stay open for about a minute then they go back to normal????

any idea why they are doing this???

Hi
I've not noticed behavior as obvious as this myself, but it's not unusual for tiny puppies to 'pause' when they're eliminating.

It may be their little bodies way of handling the physical action involved, or perhaps if their stools are harder than they should be (really should be liquid at this age, but in bottle-fed puppies they can become too firm) they're a little constipated which is making it difficult for them to poop.

I'd suggest asking your veterinarian about this to make sure all is well. Overall if they're putting on weight, feeding normally, eliminating regularly and seem content, then chances are it's nothing to worry about. I always prefer to be safe than sorry though so do mention it to your vet.

Best of luck with your puppies.
