Nursing a week old chihuahua?
Hi! My chihuahua had her first litter of puppies, five of them. She got, what i believe to be, milk fever ( on december 20, 2008 ). The vet told us she can't feed them anymore,so we have to bottle feed them.
It's only been a couple days since that has happened, but it is difficult to get them to nurse. My concern is that they aren't nursing well, but they don't cry at all, they sleep without a problem, and when i try to feed them they drink a little but not much.
If they weren't getting enough they'd cry, right? Should i be worried about them not getting enough to eat? I'm just worried i'm doing something wrong! or if the puppies just need time to adjust to the bottle.
It sounds as though you're doing fine for now. Yes if puppies aren't getting enough food they will usually be very unsettled, cry a lot and feel cool/cold.
If they are warm, plump and sleeping between feeds, chances are they are getting enough to eat. Chihuahuas are very tiny, and they probably don't need as much milk as you think they do. I'd recommend that you check out my New Born Puppies page, as it has lots of tips and advice on hand rearing puppies.
If you're in doubt or you're worried about the puppies, I would suggest that you check with your vet too, they should be able to help.
Once you get into a routine with these pups and they adjust to bottle feeding etc., it should get easier. I wish you the best of luck with them.
