panting still 12 hours after birth of 5 puppies

My Chaweenie gave birth 12 hours ago to 5 puppies for the first time.

She was scared so she tried to run off with the first one still attached. She did that with the second one too.

It has been 12 hours now and she's still panting. Is this normal?

Dogs sometimes get very scared during their first whelping, you'd think nature would prepare them better but it's not always the case!

It's possible that she's still feeling very anxious which is why she's panting and stressed, and I think the first thing to do is to try to help her calm down.

Make sure that she and her puppies have a nice, warm, quiet place to be - out of the main traffic areas but close enough that she won't feel isolated. A mud room, or spare bedroom is often a good choice, somewhere she is familiar with and feels safe.
