Pitbull bronchitis?

Is this serious; a 6 year old male pitbull, sounds like he has bronchitis, and sometimes hacks when he coughs. (

It's like he's trying to cough up something) symptoms has been ongoing for a month

It sounds as though your dog may have Kennel Cough, this is most likely if he hasn't had the Bordatella vaccine, but there are obviously other possibilities too. Only a vet can make a definitive diagnosis I'm afraid.

Kennel Cough is generally as self-limiting condition, ie the dog will recover without treatment given time.

HOWEVER, there are often secondary infections which occur, usually a bacterial chest infection which can lead to pneumonia and is serious.

To be safe, I would really recommend having your dog examined by your veterinarian to make sure that there's no condition that needs treatment right now.
