i need help!
my pom is 5 weeks old, almost 2 pounds has diarrhea and sometimes sounds like it has something stuck in his throat like bronchitis - between a wheeze and a hack.
Hi Kai
At 5 weeks old, your puppy should still be with his momma, he's much too young to be separated from his canine family. At this age he should have some degree of immunity received from his mommas' milk, but if he's been separated from his canine family it's important that he be started on his puppy shots and that he's treated for puppy worms.
The puppy diarrhea and the coughing/hacking are not necessarily related. Diarrhea can be caused by a number of things, from a sudden change in diet, to one of the many dog illnesses that puppies are vulnerable to.
The hacking/coughing/wheezing could be due to illness as well, perhaps an upper respiratory infection or Kennel Cough. Or it could be something called 'reverse sneezing' which is a sort of bronchial 'spasm', that is most likely to affect small breed dogs with short muzzles.
Reverse sneezing sounds worrying, but it's usually not serious, and sometimes you can stop an 'attack' by gently rubbing the dogs throat, or by holding 2 fingers across his nostrils. It's tends to be aggravated or triggered by excitement or over-exertion, and if your dog tends to start this behavior when he's very excited or been running around, this may be the problem.
With puppies it's always better to be safe than sorry, so if you're at all worried about his health, have him examined by your veterinarian. If the diarrhea continues or gets worse, if he seems lethargic, vomits, or shows any other signs of illness, get him help right away. Little puppies can get very sick, very fast.
I wish you the best of luck with him.
