Pup with an excessive amount of sleep around eyes

Hi there,

I have an 11 week old poodle pup and he seems to get an excessive amount of sleep around his eyes. Within a few days it is so hard and crusty and extremely difficult to remove. I have tried to do this on a daily basis but it is still very hard to remove, I use a damp cloth to wipe the area with.

Can you tell me if this is normal and if so is there something special to use to clean his eyes with?

Thank you for your time.
Kind Regards
Kate

Hi Kate
This discharge may be due to some type of infection, rather than just be 'sleep', so I'd definitely recommend having your pup examined by your veterinarian to make sure that there's no problem like that.

If his eyes are healthy, then it's just that he has more of the normal 'tears' or discharge than most and it can be tricky to keep the area clean in this instance.

Wiping a couple of times daily with warm water should help, and there are eye washes and other products you can try.

If this discharge is staining the hair around his eyes then I'd recommend trying 'Angel Eyes' which is a dietary supplement that you add to his food daily and it works to reduce this staining from the inside out.

I'm sorry I can't be more help, but I'd suggest the vet is the first port of call and then take it from there. Best of luck with your pup.
