Puppies ate part of their foam bed!

I left my two 8 month old 20lb schnauzer mix puppies gated in the kitchen while I was at work. They were in there for about 5 hours, and I came home to their bed ripped open and foam bits everywhere. About 2-3 hours after I got home, one of the puppies puked up a handful of soggy foam pieces. He seemed fine right after, and both dogs are eating, drinking, and playing just fine. They have also both gone number one and two since.

Should I take them to the vet, or should I wait and see, since they both seem to be okay? And should I feed them dinner, or wait and see if they pass any of the foam first? I'm really not sure how much was eaten since it was so shredded.

Hi
Puppies have a tendency to eat everything that's not nailed down (and sometimes things that are!), and generally these odds and ends pass through and 'out the other end' without any trouble. Of course, it depends on exactly WHAT it is they've eaten and toxic or poisonous stuff, or things like rocks, rawhide, string and so on are dangerous.

As your puppies are acting normally and don't seem to be having any trouble with their stools etc. then I think in this case you can afford to 'wait and see', but be on the lookout for any problems and get them straight to your vet should you be concerned in any way. I'm not a vet myself so I would also recommend that you call your vet and ask his/her advice to be on the safe side.

In future, don't leave their bed, blankets, soft toys, rawhide etc. with them when you go to work. Only sturdy, safe chew toys (see my Indestructable Dog Toys for ideas) should be within their reach.

Hope this helps and that they both survive their 'dietary indiscretions' without any problem. Best of luck.
