How can I make my puppy 9 week Chorky to stop biting and chewing on everything. He tear up my carpets in the seams, nibbles on my hands and feet. He is like a furry alligator.
I try all suggestions in the puppy books. He does not stop biting. I also have had 4 hours of private training by a professional dog trainer. I am getting worried that he will always bite or nibble.
Do you think he will grow out of it and in that case how old will he be by then.Any suggestions?
Hi Ingerre All puppies bite and nip to some degree, they also all chew on stuff.... however, some tend to be more determined and stubborn about it than others! One of our pups was nicknamed 'Piranha' as she was such a biter!
I'd recommend that you read my Puppy Biting and Puppy Chewing pages and follow all the tips and advice there. You may need to use the water-spray bottle method on this pup to deter him from nipping.
It's important to be very consistent and patient, and to use the same correction EVERY single time he nips/bites. Puppies learn through repetition and you'll need to be very calm and patient.
Yes, he will grow out of this behavior to some extent, but it's important to make sure the realizes that it's not okay now, while he's young enough to be impressionable and his teeth are still tiny. Dogs are creatures of habit and you don't want him to think this is a habit that you accept.
Obviously you've worked very hard at training him and are following the right path, just stick with it and he will learn eventually.
