Our 16 week old bulldog is on Arden Grange puppy food and we were told by the breeder that they shouldn't get wind on this quality of food..
Fabio does eat very fast but the wind is horrid, his stools are not firm and have been moderate to runny, he is a hoover and when in the garden will chew anything he can..
We have tried bio yogurt in his food that was also recommended by the breeder.. Fabio only has this dry food 3 times a day..
Apart from the wind hes a very happy, boisterous loving puppy..
Hi Tina
The biggest cause of flatulence in puppies and dogs is swallowing too much air when they're eating. Bulldogs and other breeds with shortened muzzles are more at likely to do this than other breeds.
As Fabio is a chow-hound and guzzles his food down, I'd recommend that the first thing you do is to buy a 'go slow' dog bowl which has raised nodules in the bottom to make eating a bit more difficult. As Fabio has a short muzzle and fairly 'flat' face, you'll most likely need a bigger size than you would use in a regular bowl, take a look at this bowl as it's the type of product I mean.... Brake-Fast Dog Food Bowl . You shouldn't have trouble finding one of these.
The next most common culprit is 'dietary indiscretion' (basically eating a lot of stuff they shouldn't!) and it sounds as though Fabio does that too. Eating scraps, stuff found in the yard, feces, garbage, mud etc. etc. leads to an upset tummy and gas, puppy diarrhea and even vomiting.
I'd strongly recommend that you supervise your puppy very carefully whenever he's running around, whether indoors or outside. Don't allow him to eat anything he shouldn't! Puppies do grow out of this behavior to some extent, but you'll need to be vigilant and correct him whenever he tries to ingest something that's not allowed.
There are other possible causes for excessive wind in dogs and pups, and these include worms, bacterial or parasitic digestive illnesses, dog food allergies and intolerance and more. Only your veterinarian can make a diagnosis on these though so a visit to your vet to rule out any underlying health issues wouldn't hurt.
I hope this helps and that you find what's causing little Fabio to be so gassy. Best of luck.
