I think my puppy may be constipated. 1 week old English Bulldog. Gaining weight and appears healthy.
Tonight she will not nurse and her belly feels hard. She is grunting/moaning constantly. She pees and appears to be bearing down to have a bowel movement but nothing happens. The mother has been stimulating her anal area. What can I do to help?
Hi
If the momma is nursing her and she's also stimulating her to eliminate, but nothing is happening then she may well be constipated.
Increasing her fluids by bottle feeding her a little warm water may help, but unless she wants to suck, and can do so strongly, then it may not work.
At this young age I'd be inclined to seek a vets' help at this point, just to make sure that constipation IS the problem, and to find a remedy. A 1 week old pup is very vulnerable and you need to be very careful about what you do/don't do.
If necessary a vet can give an enema, but it's not something that is often needed, or something you should try. If the situation doesn't improve quickly, call your vet for advice.
Best of luck, hope she's doing much better soon
