Puppy diagnosed with coccidia

My puppy was diagnosed with having coccidia. She is extremely underweight and is battling dehydration. I have been giving her 2 oz of Pedialyte every hour by syringe and a little chicken broth.

She was prescribed Albon which she takes daily. Tonight she is laying still and whining with every slightly whining with every breath.

Does anyone have an suggestions on what else I can do? I have an appointment with the Vet in the morning but I am worried that she may not make it through the night.

Hi
I'm so sorry to hear about your puppy's problems.

Coccidia is a reasonably common condition which usually strikes puppies who are immuno-supressed for one reason or another... another illness, stress, an injury etc.

Albon is the most commonly prescribed medication and is usually effective, but it can take more than one round of treatment to clear it up.

The fact that your pup is dehydrated and underweight may well be as much of a problem as the coccidia and keeping her hydrated and nourished is vitally important. The pedialyte and chicken broth are good, but she may need IV fluids and nutrients at this point.

If there's ever a time when you have a puppy in this kind of condition and your vet's office isn't open then I would strongly suggest getting her to a 24 hour emergency pet hospital or clinic right away. Most areas have them although it may be a little bit of a drive. Sometimes getting help even a few hours earlier can make all the difference.

I hope and pray your little girl makes it through, and eventually makes a full recovery. You can learn more about coccidia here... Coccidiosis In Dogs. I wish you both the best of luck.
