puppy diarrea

by Ginger
(central point, Or, USA)

I have 2 pom/cavalier king charles puppies. they were diagnosed with giardia at their first vet visit. I gave them all their prescribed medicine. The vet visit was on 4/22.

They still have diarrhea. They are still eating, drinking, and playing a lot. They are not acting sick. I also have 3 other older dogs and there is nothing wrong with them. Any suggestions?

Hi Ginger
I'd recommend that you take your pups back to the vet and ask him to run the tests again. It could be that the medication hasn't totally eliminated the Giardia protozoa in their systems.

Sometimes the course of treatment has to be repeated.

The good news is that they are feeling well, are eating and drinking normally, and don't appear to be suffering any ill-effects from their illness.

Giardia is a bit difficult to totally eradicate, and even when the symptoms subside, the dog can still be a 'carrier' of this disease. It's very contagious, so keep an eye on your older dogs for any signs of illness. Humans can catch it too, so be very careful about hygiene when handling your puppies.

You can find out more about this illness on my Giardia in Dogs page.

Best of luck with your pups, hope they're all clear soon.
