puppy drinking pee?

by omara
(merced ca)

i just got two puppies they're about three weeks old and both are females and i noticed that one of my puppies keeps on sucking on my other pups bottom and drinking her pee?

is this normal or is telling me that there is something wrong with my puppy?

Hi Omara
These puppies are much too young to be away from their momma, they're still tiny babies and aren't even old enough to be weaned.

This behavior isn't because your puppy wants to drink her sister urine, it's because she is missing nursing on her momma and this is the closest thing she can find that mimics the comfort from feeding on her mom.

Once they begin to eat puppy food and lap water, and get a bit older, this behavior will naturally end. I don't think there's anything wrong with your puppy.

You will need to keep an eye on the pup that is being 'sucked on' though. If her sister's suckling is intense, it could cause irritation/redness etc. If this happens you will need to separate them for a while.

I think you might find my New Born Puppies and Puppy Development pages interesting.

Best of luck with your pups.

I took my pups to the vet after I posted my concern. The male who was feeling sick was treated with antibiotics and we had to separate them. He started to feel better shortly after. He is now almostm4 months old and doing great!

I have two great Dane puppies that I am bottle feeding and the male keeps drinking his sister's urine. Today he is not feeling very well, he is too relaxed, doesn't want to eat and keeps wining. His belly also seems quite bloted and I am wondering if he is being poisoned by the urine? They are two weeks old today and it's really sad to see him like this. I will take him to the vet tomorrow but do you have any advice in the meantime?
Thank you so much!

pee-pee suckers
by: Kari Cowan

I have a litter of 9 Lab pups. Their Mother could not feed them after having a seizure, so I have taken over the feeding. I still let Mom clean them and stuff but because the Vet said not to let her feed them at all because of her health, I cant let her cuudle or nuzzle them or she tries to lay down and feed them. I have noticed the pee-pee suckers often have very loose stool. Is this a problem? Should I introduce water? Or should I even try to stop them? They are only 18 days old.
