puppy hiccups

My 6 week old pitbull puppy always gets the hiccups why?? is there a way to get rid of them??

Hi
Some puppies get hiccups, some get them A LOT! But it's usually nothing to worry about.

Adult dogs don't get them, it seems to be something puppies grow out of as they mature. Sometimes eating too fast is a 'hiccup trigger', so if your pup wolf's down his food try using a wide, shallow dish and spreading his food out so that it's not so easy for him to guzzle it down.

Eating or drinking too much can also trigger hiccups as an overfull tummy can press on the diaphragm.

Very occasionally hiccups can be the sign of a serious parasite infection, a canine illness such as Distemper, or a congenital defect. If this is the case then a puppy would normally seem sick in other ways (vomiting, diarrhea, discharge from nose/eyes, lethargy and so on).

If your puppy seems happy, active and healthy and is eating and drinking normally, then I wouldn't worry about the hiccups. However, if he seems sick in any way, take him to your vet for an examination.

Best of luck with him.

My 8 week old terrier mix puppy gets hiccups in the middle of the night too. I don't notice her getting them after she eats or drinks but she doesn't seem to eat a whole lot either. She'll pick up one or two pieces of kibble and eat it but that'll be it for most of the day. It just seems like she eats very little. Nothing else seems wrong with her though except that she seems to sleep almost all the time. We're making an appointment for the vet just as to be on the safe side though.

My 7 week pit pull gets hiccups too. Especially after he eats. ironically, so do i. its called getting "vapor locked" and it comes from eating to fast and not letting the gasses in your stomach escape

I have an 8 week old sweet Catahoula puppy who often has the hicccups, especially in bed at night. I didn't even know that hiccups were possible in dogs. I was relieved to know its normal, thanks.

Thank you for the information...My 8 week old golden retriever lab gets them....I just noticed that she ate too fast, especially after being in the kennel for up to two hours...She's fine now after 2 minutes of hiccups.

My Hiccuping English Bulldog

My puppy also hiccups a ton. I'm glad to hear it's nothing serious. It seems unrelated to how fast or when he eats as sometimes he gets them in the middle of the night. However, I did learn that to slow a puppy down eating you can throw a couple of ice cubes in with his food. This has worked great for us!s

My English Bulldog gets the hipcups alot and I have never seen this in puppys. And I grew up with puppies and none them have had hipcups.

I am glad to hear that this is not a serious problem. It just seems weird to me.

Thanks
