Puppy hiding under bed

i have a new puppy (had him for barely a day) he is 12 weeks old and a german shepherd mix, anyways he's very docile he doesn't bite or claw and he's already learning to go to the bathroom outside so he's smart i think...the problem i'm having is for the past few hours he has been hiding under the bed and he won't come out, he'll let me pet him and if i put my hand beside him for a bit he'll end up rolling next to it, but he absolutely refuses to come out, every time i tried to get him out he'll struggle and squirm and go farther in....
i COULD force him out but i don't wanna be rough and he seems scared for some reason...anyone have ideas what's wrong and maybe ideas on how to get him out?

Hi Ty
Sorry I didn't get to answer this yesterday, and I expect by now your little guy is out from under the bed!
However, I think if you read my Bringing Home A New Puppy page it will help you understand his behavior a bit more.
Most puppies go through an adjustment period when they first come into their new, forever, homes. It's a big move for them (and if they're less than 8 weeks old, or older than 10 weeks it can be even more difficult for them), and they get stressed, anxious and scared. Homesick too.
It sounds as though your puppy has a great temperament, because in spite of being scared and cornered, he didn't bite, growl, nip etc. I wouldn't ever force him to come out if he does this, if he feels safe under the bed, just let him be. He will come out when he feels more confident... or when he gets hungry :o) You can try and encourage him with treats or special toys, but don't overwhelm him or force him.
Once this little guy has been with you for a few days he will start to feel more confident and you'll begin to see his real personality shine through. Just be patient with him and show him gentle, calm, loving attention and he'll soon want to be next to you all the time.
Best of luck with your new pup.
