Puppy is crazy for food
I have a 3+ month old toy poodle and so far, so good.
My question is regarding feeding. She doesn't beg from the table when we are eating because we are very strict about not giving her table food.
When we feed her the dog food (high quality dry puppy food) she goes nuts! Barking, begging, whining and when we put it down on the floor, she is like a wild animal trying to get at the food.
We feed her three times a day about a quarter cup per feeding.
This is not really a problem for us, we would like to know how to correct this behavior so she will be a little more calm.
It isn't terribly unusual for a puppy to be over-excited about meal times. For some (the real chow-hounds) it's the highlight of their day!
However, it does sound as though your pup is a little excessive in her behavior. There are two possibilities that come to mind right away. The first is that she has worms. These intestinal parasites absorb most of the nutrition from the food your pup eats, leaving her starving hungry - no matter how often she eats. If you haven't already had her tested for worms and routinely de-wormed I would suggest that you take her to your vet and get that taken care of.
The other option is that she simply isn't getting enough food. Using the directions on the bag is a good starting point, but they are guidelines only. If you have a healthy pup (ie no worms) who is finishing up the food you give her within a couple of minutes, she's not getting enough. The aim is to have a few pieces of kibble left in the bowl and have her walk away satisfied within 10 minutes. Small and tiny breeds (such as toy dogs) have fast metabolisms and tiny tummies, so they need to eat often and their bodies use up their food very quickly.
If neither of these actions help, I would recommend discussing the problem with your veterinarian. Best of luck!
