Puppy play

My 8 week old puppy just lays around all the time. Sometime he will play bite and slap his paw at you but 95 percent of the day he is sleeping.

I know this is not normal and I need some advice. My mom works with animals and she said maybe worms causing him discomfort but she de-wormed him yesterday and no change at all and it has almost been 24 hours.

Well, this kind of behavior could mean your puppy is sick, but it could also just be a reaction to moving to a new home and family.

Many puppies go through an adjustment period where they seem to sleep more than usual, may lose their appetite, and they kind of withdraw a bit from everyone. This usually lasts a few days to a week or so, and as the puppy gets comfortable in his/her surroundings and new home, their real personality starts to shine through.

However, in that case, your puppy wouldn't seem 'sick'. If your puppy has repeated episodes of diarrhea and/or vomiting, can't (or won't) eat or drink, and seems totally disinterested in toys, treats, play etc. (ie he won't play with you at all, has not 'sparkle' in his eyes etc.), then he may be suffering from a canine illness or disease.

Worms can make a puppy feel poorly, and the deworming medication can make them vomit or have diarrhea. But if you're at all worried I would strongly suggest that you take this pup to a veterinarian for a full check up. It's always better to be safe than sorry.
