puppy still has worms!

I have a 8 week old puppy. At 5 weeks, she had her first round of shots. I didn't notice any worms in the feces until she turned 7 weeks.

She's now vomiting, and has diarrhea. I have a vet appoinment in a few days. I just want to know if I should worry.

Hi
Most puppies have worms to begin with, but regular deworming by a vet (usually done at the same time as the puppy shots) takes care of it. One treatment isn't enough, and using over-the-counter products is often ineffective and these can also have side effects.

The vomiting and diarrhea may not be related to a worm problem at all. A very severe infestation can cause a pup to vomit worms, but there are also other signs such as a voracious appetite, a skinny body with distended tummy, and maybe a dry harsh coat. You won't necessarily see the worms in a pups' stools unless it's severe, and not all worms are visible to the naked eye.

Unvaccinated puppies are at risk of all sorts of dog illnesses and puppy diarrhea and vomiting are classic signs of many of them. I'd strongly suggest making an appointment for your vet to examine your puppy asap to make sure that she's not sick. The earlier a diagnosis is made and treatment started, the better her chances of a full recovery.

Hope this helps, best of luck with your puppy.
