puppy throwing up and runny stool

my puppy is about 4 months old and has been throwing up clear liquids for 2 days along with runny stool with a little blood in it.

he still eats and drinks and his nose is still cold and wet what's wrong with him?

Hi Alaina
If your pup is still eating and drinking normally, and generally manages to keep most of his food/water down, then chances are it's not Canine Parvovirus which is one of the most common reasons for these symptoms.

The other possibilities are parasitic or bacterial infections, perhaps Coccidiosis or something similar.

Only a vet can give you an accurate diagnosis, usually by taking a stool sample and testing for parasites etc., so I strongly recommend that you get your pup to your vet for a check up just as soon as you can.

Best of luck, hope he's doing much better soon.

Puppy vomiting and runny stools
by: Anonymous

I had a 16 week old begle/basset hound I adopted from a local shelter. I didn't even get him home before he vomited in my van. I assumed it was from the car ride (since he was almost 2 hours away thats a distance for a little guy on his first ride). Once I got him home I took him outside to potty and it was nothing but brown water. He just layed around the entire rest of the evening and would not eat. The next morning he again had the "brown water" and began vomiting. I did some research online and came across PARVO (or cainine PAROVIRUS) which can be fatal if not treated. I took him in that morning to the local vet and had my worst fear confirmed, he was put on an IV and given an injection of Reglan (medacine used to stop vomiting in both humans and cainine's), the vet sent me home with an IV bag of fluids to administer to him every 5 hours, he received 200cc of fluid and the Reglan was injected in his IV every 8 hours. The vet informed me that most cases of Parvo are fatal because of dehydration and not the actual virus itself. The puppy will vomit and dirraha itself to death pretty much. My dog was kept on his IV for 3 days with the Reglan shots every 8 hours (this cut down the vomiting but did not stop it compleatly). The morning of the 3rd day I was dead on my feet with having to get up every couple hourst to administer IV fluids and shots and was about ready to give up since there was no sign of improvement, I let him out potty and when he came in I attempted to give him some water and he drank it, then I gave him just a little bit of soft food (given to me by the vet to be gentle on a sore tummy) and he ate about 2T which was a milestone since he had not ate at all since I got him. I took him in to the vet that morning, as I had done every morning that he was on his IV and the vet gave him a little food and again he ate, he then removed the IV and said "we licked it....he's on the mend now". It took about 3 to 4 weeks for his stools to return to normal but he stopped vomiting entirely and began to increase his appitite. When your dog exhibits any symptoms of vomiting and loose stools get him to the vet QUICK!!! I did mine and it saved his life, the vet said in a matter of 2 days they can die from this virus if untreated. There is no cure for the virus itself but keeping your pooch hydrated during the phase of the illness is the key. Most pups that stay hydrated will recover. In his 30 years of being a vet he only lost 2 parvo pups and thats mainly because they were taken in way too late to begin with. It cost me $135.00 for the 4 vet visits and the IV and shots I was given but it was all worth it!!! KEEP THE FAITH and don't let people tell you your puppy is as good as gone if he is doing that....they can survive Parvo with your help!!!! Hope my story can help someone else and save a few young lives!!! =)
