My dog Rex
by: Janice

Rex got over Parvo and lived to be about 10 years old, dying of liver cancer. I hope Lillie recovers fully. Rex ended up with discolored teeth, caused by the Parvo. My thoughts and prayers are with you, and Lillie, too.

I hope Lucy is doing better......
by: Sue from The Puppy Dog Place

Hi Patty,
I'm so sorry to find that Lucy had Parvo and the spoiled sausage was just a coincidence. I've had my own experience with Parvo and I know how devastating this illness can be.

Parvo can (and often does) kill very quickly, that Lucy has managed to hold her own for this long is a good sign. Although a pup can relapse very suddenly, every day she keeps fighting and moves forward is cause for hope.

Thanks Janice for adding your advice and support to this post. As far as I know, puppies aren't born with Parvo, but if their momma has been vaccinated (or has survived Parvo herself) she will pass on a temporary immunity to her pups through the colostrum (pre-milk) she produces in the first 24 - 48 hours after whelping.

Unfortunately, there is always a 'window of vulnerability' with puppies in terms of getting vaccines done at exactly the right time to be effective, and until all sets are completed protection is not 'full'. In some breeds, even completed vaccination isn't enough protection. I own Rottweilers and had two pups who had received all 3 sets of shots (I give my pups 4 sets, the last one at 16 weeks, but these pups were only 14 weeks old) get Parvo. One died, one survived.

Never let puppies come in contact with public areas, other dogs who you do not know for sure are fully vaccinated, or anyplace that you are not certain is 'safe', until they've had all 3 sets of shots. You simply can't be too careful.

When I answer these sorts of questions, I always recommend being safe rather than sorry, and for diarrhea/vomiting in pups that lasts more than a few hours, a vet visit is a must - for exactly the reason we see above.

Patty - I very much hope Lucy is recovering now, and that she will be one of the survivors. Please let us know how it goes. Best of luck.

Puppies and parvo virus
by: Janice

I am not a vet, but my puppy Rex got parvo because he was interacting with dogs (We took him to PetSmart) before his series of shots were done. We didn't take any chances with Fred and kept him at home until he was 4 months old.

I hope your puppy recovers fully.

My dog, Rex:
Rex got over the parvo. He was 3 months old, I think, and very small, when he had it. He lived to be 11 1/2 years old. He was my son's first dog. I own two rescue dogs, now, and have a pet-sitting business. It's a dog's life :D

Please visit http://janicerickert.blogspot.com/ You may also visit this site and search "Janice Rickert" for my entries. You can comment, too, if you wish. My dog, Rex, isn't in the blog, because he died before I started it. (I don't even have any digital photos of him. I still miss him).

Dear Janice
by: Patty

Thank you for the kind words Janice & I'm sorry for the loss of your Rex - they are so like family members! Did he later die (the cancer) as a result of the Parvo or did the Parvo virus stay within his body? This a.m. the Vet told me that Lillie was doing "ok" & that she was going to start her on solid food to see the results. Thanks again Janice for your concern & loss..... Patty P.S. Do you know if puppies can be born with the Parvo virus?

Hope and pray your puppy gets well soon
by: Janice

I had a puppy with parvo. He was vomiting and having "the runs" too. He got so sick, that he was walking sideways and falling down (from dehydration). He spent a few days on IV's at the vet hospital and recovered. He ended up with discolored teeth. He died of liver cancer in January of 2006. Rest in peace, Rex!

The Worst Senerio
by: Patty Lafon Sayers

With regards to my question about Lillie, our chocolate lab 2-1/2 mo. old puppy who continued to vomit mucous, blood streaked & the same with her fecees, we took her to the vet after 4 days. She has Parvo! She will stay at the vet until we see how far the parvo has progressed. At such a young age, puppies are like babies - their immunity is not very mature. We hope for the best, but are planning for the worse. Thank you for your input & care. Patty
