Puppy's Umbilical Hernia

What are you supposed to do when the puppies umbilical cord area is swollen...does she need to go to the vet of is there somthing i can do to help?

i touched it and it got smaller...not sure what to do...she is only 5 weeks old

Hi
Generally a small swelling around the umbilical area isn't a true hernia, but rather what's called an 'incomplete closure'. This is where the abdominal wall has failed to knit together properly and a little loop of intestine is pushing through.

In many cases this heals itself given time, as the puppy grows, the abdominal wall seals itself. Unless the loop of intestine gets trapped between the muscles and becomes 'strangulated' there's no real cause for concern. You can consult your veterinarian and ask his advice, he may want to repair it or may tell you to 'wait and see'.

There's not really anything you can do to help, just keep an eye on the bulge and make sure that it is 'mobile' - ie. you can push it back in without problem. Although I wouldn't recommend you mess with it too much.

If at any time, the bulge becomes hard, immobile and painful to the touch, seek veterinary help right away as it may be 'strangulate'. This needs surgery and quickly.

best of luck!
