shelties puppies on slippery floors

I have two 8 week old Sheltie puppies and have been told that I must not allow them under any circumstances, to walk on any slippery floors until they are 8 months old.... is this correct or not?

It seems a shame I have to keep the penned up or in the garden all the time, I feel I am missing out on bonding with them.

My house is completely tiled floors everywhere, but some areas are non-slip tiles, it just seems a bit harsh to stick to this rule but if it is correct then I will do so.

Hi MaryPuppies grow and develop very quickly and their joints and ligaments can be damaged if they're always slipping, sliding, falling etc. The same thing can happen from one accident, such as stepping in a hole while running, or jumping off too great a height. It's impossible to completely protect them from all risks, without locking them in a crate 24/7... and of course that has it's own dangers not to mention being cruel!

I'm not a veterinarian, and I don't own Shelties myself (although the first puppy I ever owned at 13 was a Sheltie), so this is only my personal opinion.......

I would try to limit the amount of exposure your pups have to the slippery tile floors by setting up 'pathways' around your house using lengths of carpet, 'runners' and non-slip mats etc. If possible buy some cheap area rugs and put them in at least one or two of the rooms you use the most. That way your puppies will have a lot less tile to deal with.

You're right to be concerned about having to keep them shut outdoors or confined to small areas away from you and your family. They need to spend time with you so that they can bond and grow in confidence. Puppies and dogs NEED to be with their people.

If you're creative I think you'll be able to find ways to work around the flooring in your home and to find a balance between protecting their growing bodies and giving them the attention and interaction that they need.

I hope this helps and wish you the very best of luck with your pup.
