Sick Puppy

by Jamie
(Lenoir,nc, usa)

We have a Boxer/hound mix puppy who is about 4 months old.

He has had diarrhea for about 2 weeks and today I noticed when he was trying to poop that it was a clear mucous with blood in it.

Do you know what the problem might be? He's had his shots and been wormed.

thanks

Hi Jamie
It sounds as though there's some inflammation/irritation somewhere in your puppy's colon. That would cause the mucus/blood in his stool.

If he were acting sick (ie vomiting, lethargic, loss of appetite etc.) I would say take him to the veterinarian immediately because blood in the stool can be a sign of serious illness

However, if this were happening, I expect you would have mentioned it :o) SO... I'm assuming he seems happy and healthy other than the diarrhea. If that's so, it's most likely that something caused the first bout of puppy diarrhea and it's got into a kind of 'vicious circle' - the diarrhea causes irritation/inflammation, which causes more diarrhea, which causes more irritation..... and so on.

It's also possible that he has picked up some bacterial infection, or maybe still has worms even though he's been dewormed. Any of these can be treated by your veterinarian and I suggest that you take your pup to the clinic where they can do a fecal test if necessary and get him all fixed up.

Hope this helps. Best of luck with your puppy.
