Sudden onset of drooling in 14 month Lab puppy

by Mary
(Saint Paul, Minnesota USA)

My fourteen (14) month old male lab, started to drool two (2) days ago.

He is acting normal, eating, drinking and playing... the drooling is profusive, like that of a St. Bernard or a Masfiff. He is leaving puddles all over the house and I can't see that anything is wrong with his mouth, although he doesn't really let me look.

Is there a reason he would start to drool like this? Thank you for your consideration and for any information you may have regarding my question.

Peace,
Mary O (Moby's Mom)

Hi Mary
I can really only recommend that you get your pup to your veterinarian as soon as you can. The amount of drooling he's doing is obviously NOT normal and there's something wrong.

Excessive salivation in dogs can be caused by all sorts of things including injuries or infections in the gum, teeth, throat, or a foreign object lodged in his mouth, throat or intestines. Certain toxins can cause this as can intestinal issues or liver problems.

Only your veterinarian can make an accurate diagnosis and treat him accordingly. Hopefully it's something simple that's causing the problem, but please get him examined by your vet right away to make sure that there's nothing serious going on and to help him get better quickly. Good luck.
