Tail hair missing on Border Collie pup

by Kay
(Uk)

I have a 5month old Border Collie pup, i've noticed a month ago that he is missing a bit of his tail top (white top), it looks like someone cut it with scissors or simmilar sharp object, but there is still some hairs left that kind of form the tail end.

It looks so strange, have no idea how it could of happened, i was brushing him that afternoon and all was fine and after a play in a park he was missing it! Anyway, is it going to grow back or not? It seems exactly the same now, a month after it has happened.

Thank you for your answer, Kay.

Hi Kay
This is something I've not heard of before! As it seems to have happened suddenly, perhaps he got his tail caught in something or it happened when he was playing with other dogs and the hairs got ripped out.

I would have expected to see signs of the hair growing back in by now, but perhaps it will take a bit longer as this is one of the times of year when dogs shed more heavily.

If there are any other patches of hair loss or any red/irritated skin then it's possible he has a skin condition that's caused this. Your veterinarian will be able to diagnose something like that.

Honestly, I really don't know what has caused this or whether it will grow back again quickly. If you're really concerned about it I'd suggest talking to your vet. However, if he seems perfectly happy and healthy otherwise, if the hair loss isn't showing up anywhere else and his tail isn't getting more 'bald' then I'd probably recommend giving it some time and seeing what happens. Best of luck
