Toy Min Pin Has Dry Bald Spots

What would anyone recommend for my 8 mo.-old toy male min pin for dry skin.

I have been putting salmon oil on the dry food (holistic Blue Buffalo) and use oatmeal anti-itch shampoo on him every 3 weeks.

I need advice! Thank you.

Hi Elizabeth
First of all I would make sure you have your pup checked out by your veterinarian to make sure that there isn't an underlying medical problem causing the dry skin and hair loss.

Conditions such as Mange in dogs, Ringworm and others can cause this type of symptom, so it's important to get him evaluated for this type of issue first of all.

If he gets a 'clean bill of health', then you may also want to consider So can dog allergies as a potential problem too. He's eating a high quality food which is excellent, but it's still possible that he's sensitive or allergic to one or more ingredients. Offering him an all-natural, organic or hypoallergenic dog food might help.

Adding the salmon oil is a good move, and although using an anti-itch shampoo may seem to help it is probably still drying out his skin to be bathed so often. I would recommend bathing him no more often than once every 6 - 8 weeks, most dogs don't need to be bathed more frequently than once every 3 months or so.

I'd recommend taking a look at my Canine Skin Allergies page as it has tips and advice on the type of products you could try to help alleviate the problem. Anything that contains hydro-cortisone is great for reducing inflammation and itching. Your vet can probably recommend products and treatment options as well.
