hi i got a 4 months old staff male puppy,i haven't left him home alone yet but tried to go out for a bit just to test him but he nonstop barked.

how can i train him to stay home and wont bark????

Hi Zeynep
It's normal for a puppy to want to be close to his owner/s, especially if this is what he's used to. However, it's also very important for him to learn that he can be left alone for periods of time without making a fuss.

Of course, like everything else this takes practice, and chances are your puppy will cry, whine, bark and complain for the first few times you leave him. It should improve as he gets used to it, and I'd recommend giving him short, 'trial runs' to help him adjust. Making sure he has some favorite, sturdy chew toys and perhaps the radio or TV for company often helps.

Some dogs are excessively anxious when left alone, and this is called separation anxiety. I don't think we can say that this is your puppy's problem just yet, as it's too early to tell. However, there are lots of tips and advice that can help with this should it arise (many of them help even mildly anxious dogs).

You can find out more about this on my Dog Training For Separation Anxiety page. Best of luck with your pup.

Leaving a puppy alone
by: Anonymous

Sometimes puppies need a den to be comfortable in. I leave Serena in the bathroom, with her toys, two beds, a chew treat, food and water, and her puppy pad. I put a 2ft high piece of plexiglass wedged in the doorway so the door is open and their is good airflow. Serena is comfortable in her confined space and willingly goes into the bathroom before I go to work. When she was smaller I used a puppy pen in my living room with her toys, bed, potty pad and food and water - I put her in there several times for about 30 minutes while I was home and she was quiet then too.

HAVE A PUPPY THAT STAYS HOME ALONE AND NOT BARK
by: MURIEL HUBBARD MOMMY OF MISS FLOPPY

I HAVE A NINE WEEK OLD BOSTON TERRY BEAGLE MIX. I LEFT HER HOME TODAY, AND THE LADY NEXT DOOR SAID SHE DID NOT HEAR A WORD FROM HER. I LEFT THE TV ON AND HAD ALL HER TOYS ON THE FLOOR FOR HER. WH3N I GOT HOME SHE CAME RUNNING AND WAGGING HER TAIL GLAD TO SEE ME. SHE RAN AROUND AND AROUND JUMPING ON ME WANTING ME TO HOLD HER SO I PICKED HER AND SAT WITH HER FOR A WHILE. AND SHE DID NOT POTTIE ON THE FLOOR, BUT HAD TO GO WHEN I GOT HOME. SHE IS JUST ONE OF THE BEST PUPPIES AROUND.
THANKS FOR LISTING TO ME.
MURIEL AND MISS FLOPPY
