Urine leakage

by Connie
(St. Louis, MO)

My puppy "leaks" oftentimes while sleeping. Does this indicate a problem and is there anything that can be done for it?

Hi Connie
A puppy shouldn't leak urine in that way. By 8 weeks old a pup has basic bladder control and should be able to 'hold it' for short periods.

If your puppy seems to need to urinate very often (although puppies do need to go a lot anyway) and sometimes only needs to pass a drop or two of urine, there may be a urinary tract infection involved.

I would suggest that you take your pup to your vet for an examination. Tell him what's going on and hopefully he will be able to fix the problem.

If you would like an opinion from an online veterinarian, you can submit your question on my Ask A Vet Page

Best of luck with your new puppy!
