Is there any other reason, besides hip dysplasia, that my 3 month lab/retriever puppy is weak in the hind legs?
He was normal until 2 days ago, the vet said he is fine.
Hi
Hip dysplasia could cause weakness in the rear legs, but 3 months is very early for symptoms to show, and usually they would come on more slowly rather than suddenly appear like this.
I'm not a veterinarian so I can only give you my opinion and experiences, but I would imagine that there are definitely other possible causes for this weakness.
It could be that your pup has injured himself in some way, either hurt his leg/s or his spine, or it could be a neurological problem, or something to do with his hips. Impossible for me to tell I'm afraid. The only way to find out for sure what is going on is to get him back to your veterinarian and insist on a full examination to address your concerns.
There is one other possibility, although it's a bit early in the season to see this, but certain ticks can cause temporary weakness or paralysis of the back legs if they are attached to your puppy or dog.
If you live in the countryside, or your pup spends time in long grass, or in damp areas where ticks are found, then I would recommend examining him inch by inch to make sure that there are no ticks on his body. If you do find any, remove them carefully right away. This page will give you more information and tips on removing ticks.. Fleas and Ticks
I would still recommend a visit to your vet anyway though just to be safe, even if you do find and remove tick/s. There's no guarantee this is the problem.
Sorry I can't be of more help but I wish you the best of luck and hope your pup is doing better soon.
