What brand of puppy food is best?

We will be picking up our puppy (he is a cross between a golden retriever and vizsla)from the breeder in three weeks and we are trying to figure out what food to put the little guy on. The breeder currently has him on Purina puppy food but we want to weane him off that and feed him a good quality brand.

We are trying to decide between two brands right now. The first one is made by Canidade and the second one is made by Kirkland/Costco (Diamond).

The Canidade is about $55 for a large bag and the Kirkland one is about $20 (both in Canadian dollars). I've heard good things about both, but I'm a little skeptical of the low price of Kirkland's food. Any advice?

Are there any other puppy food brands we should be looking at?

Hi
It's great to see that you're taking the time to do your research and consider what type of dog food to use for your puppy. Diet is very important when it comes to laying the foundation for his future health, growth and well being.

Of the two you mention, my personal opinion would be that Canindae is a better food. I've used Diamond food in the past, but found that it seemed to vary in quality from bag to bag and I'm not sure if the quality control was great. That's just my personal experience though.

There are also many other really excellent foods available. I think you'll find my Dog Food Comparisons page, as it shows you a system you can use to 'rate' any dog food according to the quality of its' ingredients. There are also links to pages that list the best foods according to this system.

I hope this helps and wish you the best of luck with your puppy.
