my 6 wk old puppy has started humping his toys and i heard that when you get them fixed it will help make this problem go away.
how long should i wait and will it in fact fix this problem what can i do until then so that he doesn't form this awkward habit?
I have another male dog that does not do this and has never done this, i just want to make sure that this attitude doesn't stay with my dog forever.
Hi At 6 weeks old, this behavior isn't a sexual one, it's more an issue of dominance. Puppies often exhibit this kind of behavior when playing with their littermates, and it's a way of sorting out the 'pecking order' within the litter.
One of the reasons that it's highly recommended that puppies don't leave their momma and siblings until at least 8 weeks of age, is so that they learn the appropriate social behaviors and manners.
For now, all you need to do is to gently correct your puppy with a firm "no" whenever you see him doing this, and redirect his attention to some other toy - maybe a bone/rope toy or something similar that he is more likely to play with. Soft toys are often the most likely to be 'humped' for obvious reasons.
He should be neutered before he's 6 months old for lots of reasons. One of them is that it helps to reduce male-dog tendencies such as wandering, 'humping', territory marking and so on. It is definitely recommended.
All dogs are different, and your older dog may just have a less dominant personality than your puppy, he may also have stayed within his canine family group for longer. It's not something I would worry about too much, but just follow the recommendations above.
