White/yellow rash on the ear tips

by Jan Vereecken

My dog is scratching a lot but I fail to find any signs of parasites on his body.

When I scratch or rub the tips of his ears he has an extreme scratch reflex and I have found white/yellow looking things (looks like dandruff) on his ear tips.

His ear tips are also thicker (minor but obvious feel) then the rest of his ear.

The dog is not in pain and I have the impression he enjoys the scratching around his ear tips. (could be the relief)

Have you any idea what this could be and what I can do about it.

Hi Jan
It's impossible for me to say what is causing your dog's discomfort, but it could be an infection, a parasitic skin condition such as mange (mites are very tiny), seborrhea, or allergies.

Sometimes flies will bite at the tips of a dog's ears if he spends a lot of time outside. This can result in irritation, itching, even infection.

I'd recommend that you take your dog to the vet for a check up.That way you can get the correct diagnosis and treatment set up. That's the only way to be sure what is going on, and get your dog some relief.

Best of luck!
