I have an 11 week old female akita puppy. For past two days not herself...not want to play much...eats but very little....sleeps a lot. She has no symptoms of constipation but has not gone in two days...just seems interested in a wee only. Vet came, says she maybe has an infection from eating something she shouldn't...had a slight fever. No vomiting...no diarrhea. Vet put her on antibiotics, gave her an injection for the fever and she also got de-wormed at the same time.
She seems a little better but still not really herself. I keep thinking maybe the worm medication or the antibiotics are making her tummy upset and also causing her not to do a number 2. Gave her some pumpkin this morning to see if that would help. No "results" yet. (She has had all her shots)
Trying not to be too worried..should I be?
Hi
Well, it definitely sounds as though your puppy is feeling unwell, the lack of appetite and lethargy are classic signs. If she had a fever then she had an infection of some sort - could be some contagious illness. The symptoms don't sound like Parvo (thankfully), but only your vet could make a correct diagnosis.
So far, you've done everything right and the fact that she seems a little better is a good sign. Worming medications or antibiotics could upset her tummy, which wouldn't help the situation but are necessary all the same.
As long as she's drinking (and peeing) normally, she's not dehydrated which is good. I would give the antibiotics time to work (generally around 3 days to see results) and try not to worry too much. She's been examined and given treatment so she's ahead of the game right now.
If she doesn't seem to be improving within a couple of days, or gets worse, I would definitely take her back to your veterinarian though. Young puppies can get sick very fast, so it's always better to be safe than sorry.
