Yorkie pup yelping when she scratches her ears

I've checked her for fleas, I've tried to look in her ears, and I can't see any inflammation. Of course, she's not very cooperative either. She's almost 3 months old and all of a sudden, she yelps when she scratches her ears or when I rub them.

She plays awfully rough with my 8 year old Sheltie and I'm wondering if Libby may have taken a couple of nips in self-defense.

I imagine I'll take her to the vet tomorrow, but does anyone have any ideas in the meantime?

Hi Sally
It definitely sounds as though your pup is feeling some discomfort, or even pain, in her ears. It could be that they've been nipped in play, but I think that would be unlikely to make both ears hurt simultaneously, or enough to make her cry out.

Ear problems can be caused by allergies, ear mites, infection and so on, and really the only way to make a correct diagnosis is to take her to your veterinarian.

Yorkies have hairy little ears, and a puppy is unlikely to sit still enough for you to see what's going on by yourself. Your vet can also start any treatment as necessary, so that would be my recommendation :o)

Best of luck, enjoy her!
